Coins of Medieval Austria and Germany, From the Time of the Black Plague (Black Death)
Possibly the most devastating pandemic in human history, the Black Plague (also known as the Black Death) ravaged Europe
in the mid-1300's, peaking between the years 1347 and 1350. Now known as the Bubonic Plague, the disease is estimated
to have killed 75 million people, roughly 30-60% of Europe's population. These striking Heller of Hall coins depict an open hand, a distinctly Jewish symbol, as well as a crisp cross, a distincly Christian one. Very interesting pieces of history!

The reverse of these Pfennig (penny) coins is often disfigured due to the striking process, known as the "vierschlag method", where the reverse was struck first. The coin was then turned over and the obverse struck. In the process of striking the obverse, the reverse was usually obliterated.
